- Poisonous drug, found in plants of the genus Strychnos.
Strychnine is obtained in colorless or white crystals, which
taste bitter. It is slightly soluble in water but more soluble in
alcohol ether, chloroform , and benzene . Used in medicine as a
stimulant and tonic, in larger doses strychnine causes excitation
of the central nervous system , resulting in extreme convulsions
. Death, however, results from paralysis of the brain's
respiratory center. Strychnine is used as a poison for rats.
